I lost my DMV registration renewal form but I paid it online. How can I know if a smog check was required on my car this year?
Answer:
Smog inspections are generally required during a vehicle's initial registration in California and once every two years thereafter. This inspection cycle will continue for as long as the vehicle is registered in California.
Having at least once been required to get a smog check during your vehicle's registration renewal indicates that your vehicle is currently in the biennial smog check requirement cycle. That being said, you may use the link below to check your vehicle's smog check history and ascertain whether or not your vehicle requires a smog check during this particular renewal period.
Remember smog inspections are required every two years, so if your vehicle's smog check history shows a valid inspection last year, one will not be needed this year. Note also that the DMV will mail you a Smog Check Requirement notice should you have paid your renewal fees without having obtained a smog inspection when one was needed. The DMV may be slow about sending you this notice so it'd be best to perhaps contact them preventively.
