Toyota Camry Trouble Code P1705 Transmission Sensor

I have a 1997 Toyota Camry whose check engine light is on.  I took for smog diagnosis and they gave me trouble code P1705.  What does this mean in repairs and is it worth it?

Answer:

Toyota Camry Trouble Code P1705 refers to your Toyota's transmission, specifically the Direct Clutch Speed Sensor. P1705 shows that there is a malfunction with the Direct Clutch Speed Sensor Circuit.

Possibly faults for this trouble code include: (1) open/short in the direct clutch speed sensor circuit; (i.e. disconnected or damaged harness) (2) Problem with the speed sensor itself; (3) ECM. The most common fault which triggers a P1705 trouble code is a defective Direct Speed Sensor (2).

P1705 should not require a new transmission and it should not require removing the transmission. The speed sensor is located toward the top center of the transmission. It has a 2-pin connecter harness.

The direct clutch speed sensor detects the rotation speed of the direct clutch drum, inside the transmission. By comparing the direct clutch speed signal and the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) signal, the engine computer detects the shift timing of the transmission gears and controls proper engine torque and hydraulic pressure in order to provide smooth gear changes while driving.
