Buying 1997 Camaro LT1 from Oregon and Registering it in California

Hi. I'm looking at buying a 1997 Chevy Camaro with the LT1 v8 from Oregon. Vehicle appears stock. Will it pass the California smog check? Were those 50 state emission cars? It is an Oregon car and in very good condition, and it has passed an emission test in Oregon recently. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Kris.

Answer:

This particular 1997 Chevy Camaro may or may not be a 50 state (California) emissions certified vehicle, however even if it is not, that will not stop it from being able to be registered in California.

The rule is any used vehicle which is equipped with the necessary Federal Emission Components (if it is a 49-state emissions certified vehicle) is eligible for California registration as long as the vehicle's exhaust emissions fall within California's limits (1999 & older vehicles only) and the vehicle's emission system has not been tampered with. This exemption does not apply to new vehicles. The emissions certification of this Chevy Camaro can be found by checking the Underhood Emission Label.
