Upgraded Turbos 1999 and Up Diesel Trucks

Are there regulations on upgraded turbos being put on a diesel truck? I'm thinking of installing a performance turbo unit on my truck but I don't want to fail the smog check. Does California check the turbo unit? Are there units that are legal to use in CA? Thanks in advance.
Answer:

There are regulations when upgrading a diesel turbo unit. During the smog inspection a diesel truck or car will undergo a visual inspection for damaged, defective, or modified smog components, one of which will be the turbo unit (where one is installed). The turbo unit must be an original manufacturer component or if aftermarket, possess an EO (executive order) number. EO numbers are issued by the California Air Resources Board and indicate an emissions component is California legal. It is possible to upgrade your truck's turbo charger, except that you'll need to make sure it is specifically designed for use with your vehicle's year, make model, and engine size; as well as be issued an EO number from CARB. Check with the turbo unit's manufacturer for details. Ensure the EO number is stamped on the turbo unit, or some identifying information on the unit indicates it is CARB approved and you can reference that identification number with data verified by the Air Resources Board as California approved.
