Will an Older Car with Newer Engine Pass the Visual?

I am considering purchasing a mid 80's truck with a worn out engine and am curious if I can replace it with a newer, more efficient engine. I know the numbers will surpass original design but will this pass the smog check visual inspection?
Answer:

California allows a vehicle to receive an engine upgrade however while installing the new engine one must also install all the emission components for that engine as well, including the exhaust system (catalytic converter), emission computer, and all electronics pertaining to the emission system. After the swap is complete, the vehicle will have to be inspected by a California State Referee. The vehicle's first smog test after the engine swap must be conducted by a state smog check referee. The Referee will ensure that the job was done properly and that the new engine does not pollute. If all is well they will issue you a BAR label which will be placed somewhere on your vehicles chassis which will be an indication that the vehicle is California legal. Subsequent smog tests may be obtained at non-referee smog stations.
