Hyundai Sonata With Brand New Engine Needs Smog Test?

I just got my 2011 Hyundai Sonata back after 3 months on a recall for a brand new engine. It presently has 500 miles on it. While it was in the shop in Alhambra, I got my registration with smog check requirement. My question is do I need to do a smog check now that I have a brand new engine? I have heard yes and no. Please help. Regards, Sandra
Answer:

We understand your concern. Yes, you'll need to have your vehicle smog inspected. The DMV will not renew your Hyundai's registration without a valid smog certificate on record. You may be able to bypass a smog check at a regular smog inspection station due to have received an engine replacement, however in order to do so you'll need to contact the state's smog check referee office and request an exemption. However, they too will want to smog test your vehicle in order to ensure the engine replacement was conducted properly. So either way, a smog check will be required. We'd recommend finding a smog station in Alhamba that can get your smog test done accurately and quickly without the appointment required to visit a referee smog center.
