Buying a Buick Grand National From Out of State

Hello. I plan on buying a 1987 Buick Grand National. The place I want to buy the car from says it is a 50 state emission compliant vehicle. On California Grand National website, it states that this vehicle conforms to US, EPA and California. The place in Maryland says there's doesn't say that, but it will pass the California smog test. What do I do now? The business selling the car is in Maryland.
Answer:

We understand there may be conflicting information regarding whether this Grand National is California compliant. It won't matter since the vehicle is used. The business selling the vehicle is correct.

There is a difference with California legal and Federal legal emission systems. However, regardless of which type of emissions certification this particular Buick Grand National is assigned (Federal 49-state legal or California), if it passes the California smog check, it can obtain registration here. We recommend you ensure that the vehicle has not had its emissions system tampered with, the check engine light is not illuminated, and the vehicle passes the tailpipe test. Once it arrives to California, obtain a smog inspection at any smog station. Advise the smog technician the inspection is required for title transfer. Once the vehicle passes the test, it's inspection results will be sent to the DMV electronically.
