How To Fix and Clear OBD-II Trouble Code P1000?

What is trouble code P1000? And how can I fix this so I can pass the smog check. The smog tech which inspected my vehicle said I'll need to visit a smog check repair station... or just drive my car for a few hundred miles. The first option may cost hundreds, and the second option will cost gas. Which one should I choose. Please help.

Answer:

OBD-II P1000 Trouble Code

On Board Diagnostic System Readiness Test Not Complete

Here is what P1000 means, in simple terms...

Trouble code P1000 DTC is a manufacturer specific trouble code, most commonly used by Ford, Jaguar, and Mazda. It simply means that the engine control computer (ECC) has not completed its emission systems testing. A vehicle's engine computer must complete multiple self-tests known as Readiness Monitors. P1000 means readiness monitor testing has not been completed. P1000 does not indicate a reason why monitor testing has not completed.

What caused my vehicle to trigger a P1000 trouble code?

If the ECC has not been able to check all the monitors since the last time the vehicle's battery may have been disconnected or any repairs made which required clearing of trouble codes, the ECC may set a P1000 trouble code. Possible causes include:

  • Battery recently been disconnected
  • Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or ECC recently disconnected
  • OBD-II monitor failure detected before drive cycle completion
  • Recently cleared trouble codes via scan tool or diagnostics device

What symptoms will my vehicle experience when trouble code P1000 is present?

A P1000 trouble code will generally trigger the check engine light on. Depending on your vehicle's make, the check engine light may be referred to as the CEL, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Service Engine Soon (SES) light. Freeze frame data containing information regarding engine sensor values at the time the ECM detected the P1000 fault will also be stored in the ECM's ROM memory and can be accessed via an OBD-II scan tool. Freeze frame data may be helpful to a technician when diagnosing the root cause of a P1000 trouble code when the fault is not easy to find. No symptoms should be obvious unless the vehicle has other underlying issues. Symptoms:

  • MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) or Check Engine light illumination

How can I fix a P1000 problem and where should I start?

In order to clear a P1000 trouble code the vehicle must be driven through a Drive Cycle until all monitors are completed or in ready status.

Can I drive my vehicle with a P1000 trouble code and illuminated CEL?

Trouble code P1000 should be diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible. You may drive your vehicle while trouble code P1000 is present.
