Subaru WRX From Out of State Needs CA Smog Check

2018 Subaru WRX, bought in Texas and shipped to CA this June. Registered and smogged already, how long until I need to smog again?

I recently moved back to CA from Texas. I bought a brand new 2018 Subaru WRX last summer in Texas and had it shipped here this June. I recently had the car smogged and registered with the DMV here in El Dorado County (I live in El Dorado Hills). My question is do I qualify for the 8 year exemption or am I the two year? Thank you!

Answer:

There is a difference with 49-state emissions legal systems and 50-state (California) emissions however a USED 49-state emissions equipped vehicle, such as in the case of your Subaru WRX from out-of-state, can pass the California smog test and receive DMV registration.

In this particular case, upon your vehicle receiving its intial smog inspection for Calofornia registration (out-of-state title transfer), it will fall into the Smog Check Exempt category (8 Years).

Note, a new vehicle on the other hand, can not be registered (or pass smog) in California if it is not California emissions certified. The smog inspection for 2000 and newer vehicles consist of a visual and functional inspection of the vehicle's engine emissions system. So long as the engine's emission system has not been tampered with, the check engine light is not on, and the emission monitors are ready, the vehicle can pass the smog test without any emissions modification; no smog parts need to be added.
