2003 Nissan Altima will not connect to smog check emission machine?

What could cause my Nissan to not communicate with the smog test machine? The smog technician said he tried everything.
Answer:

The problem could be a simply as a loose wire within the OBDII plug connector, to something as severe as a damaged engine control unit or computer. We can only recommend a continuity test be conducted between the ECU and the OBD II connector as a start, and then move into suspecting the computer. posted by SmogTips Support
