1997 Toyota Corolla - Do I have to send in the smog check certificate?

This year my car is due for a smog test. In the past when the smog test is due, I have always mailed the smog pass certificate along with the registration fees in via regular mail. Every other year I pay the registration online (when there isn't a need for a smog test). My son is telling my that I don't have to mail in my smog pass certificate anymore, and that the smog check tester will send it to the DMV electronically, and I only need to send in the registration fees - and the DMV will know that the car has been smog checked. Is this correct? I thought the DMV only could see electronically that my car has passed the test, but I still need to send in the actually certificate with the registration. Please let me know as it is due in the next few weeks.
Answer:

Your son is correct, there is no need to mail in the smog check certificate. Smog certificates are sent electronically via the smog machine. Should you want to play it safe, you can send in a copy of it, but we don't recommend sending the original.
