Nissan Maxima imported from Canada won't pass California smog check.
I need to register my 1993 Nissam Maxima, but it will not pass the smog check. The car was manufactured in Canada and never registered here in the states. I am in California and had it smog tested before. I need to know what can be done to pass smog? Answer:
It appears your Nissan Maxima is a "Grey Market Vehicle". If this is your initial registration in the
United States you'll need to contact the California State Referee office for a vehicle inspection and smog testing of your vehicle. If all is well and your Nissan Maxima passes the smog emissions test, the Referee will place a special BAR label on the chassis of your vehicle, identifying it a California legal.
Note: Out of Country (Grey-Market) vehicles may lack the necessary emissions components for legal registration in the United States.
The Smog Referees number is (800)662-7733.
If this is not the vehicle's first registration in the US or California, getting your Nissan to pass the smog test will require a diagnosis from a certified smog check repair center.
