Chevy Camaro transmission swap from automatic to manual. Will it still pass smog check?
I have a 1991 Chevy Camaro with an AUTO transmission. I want to install a manual transmission on it. Will it still be smog legal in California or will it fail the smog inspection? Answer:
Great question. Fact is your Camaro will not pass the smog check with a manual transmission, unless you replace the engine's computer as well. Your Camaro's ECU has required inputs from the Automatic Transmission. The BAR will not allow you to replace the transmission without replacing the Engine Control Unit.
Once the swap is complete you'll need to have a State Smog Check Referee inspect your Camaro to ensure the job was done correctly and your Chevy Camaro passes the smog check.
