I have a 1980 toyota pickup with 8600-yes hundred-miles from CT. 4 wheel drive- non catalyst model.
Passed first smog test at Pep boys, failed for missing hot air hose to air cleaner. Went to BAR referree who retested and failed barely on the NOX numbers. Which passed the first time at PeP. Referree sugested EGR, but examination by a mechanic determined it was fine.
What to do? Help? Answer:
We'd suggest doing a "fuel feedback" test to ensure your Toyota Pickup's fuel control system is functioning properly.
You want to make sure the engine isn't running lean and getting hot enough to produce high NOx.
The mileage is low so we probably wouldn't suggest decarbonization, but a quick compression test will not hurt.
