1998 pontiac grant am gt, fuel pump went out. cost 250 vs electric pump set-up cost 100. If i replace my fuel pump system with an outside electric fuel pump will it effect me passing emissions. i ran out of Gas and now my car isnt getting fuel properly, ive replaced the filter, regulator, cleaned the injectors and flushed the lines, the only thing left for me to change would be the low pressure sensor, which is bad, and the pump which i burned out. it would be more cost efficient if i just instal an electric pump mounted outside my tank and by pass the existing pump, but would that also bypass any sensors that would cause me to fail my next emissions test? Answer:
Switching to an external fuel pump will be considered an emission tamper and cause your Pontiac Grand Am to fail the smog check. CA smog check laws do not allow and fuel system modifications.
