1997 BMW 318i won't pass the functional part of the smog check for incomplete monitors
i had to renew my registration on march 24, so i had to do a smog test so i did it and i failed the functional check but passed everything else.
the mechanic there told me to just drive around and i did and i went back when i drove 230 miles and it failed again so i have been driving and currently i have put 405 miles is that good enough? the battery was disconnected before i did the first smog test because some fuses and electrical things were changed.
also i payed my registration but i havent received my sticker or registration papers can i get pulled over or get a ticket? Answer:
Last question first... if the registration stickers on your BMW are expired, yes you may get stopped and cited; even at times by a parking officer. You can visit a local DMV office and purchase a 30 day temporary tag for $50.00.
In terms of the smog check failure it appears your BMW is having trouble setting or completing the required Emission Monitors. Monitors are internal self-tests which the Engine Control Unit performs to ensure the computer system is functioning properly.
The link below is a .pdf of the Federal Test Procedure (FTP) Drive Cycle used by BMW. Following the drive cycle procedure properly (and assuming your BMW has no existing emission problems) your BMW's emission monitors should complete.
