2000 Mazda MPV - What could cause me to fail the NOx smog test?
My minivan failed for NOx at 15mph and 25mph. The NO reading on my minivan was 1500 ppm. My van was warmed up before the test and had a fresh tank of gas. My mechanic wants to replace the CAT. Any other options? Answer:
Your mechanic is probably right. Your Mazda MPV is a non-EGR system equipped vehicle. These vehicle's rely heavily on the Catalytic Converter for NOx reduction.
By California law however, the CAT must be the final emissions component to be suspected of failure; after all other emission components have inspected.
