1994 Saturn SC2 High HC Failed Emissions Test

Hello, My vehicle (Saturn SC@) just failed a test only smog check. The only fail was HC (ppm) at 15 mph. It measured 115 and the max is 77. What might the problem be? Why are the hydrocarbons so high? Any chance I can fix this problem myself? Thanks for your help.

Answer:

High HC is typically caused due to defective ignition components (sparkplugs, coils, distributor (if equipped).

As far as this Saturn is concerned, we've run in to many Saturn vehicles which had developed ignition problems related to the “ignition module”. A smog repair station, via an Ignition Analyzer, can diagnose your vehicle ignition system accurately. It's important to have an experienced mechanic (preferably a smog check certified mechanic) diagnose this fault.. We don't want to replacing ignition components unnecessarily.
