1998 Toyota Camry LE Failing Emission Test for High HC with New CAT

Just replaced the Catylitic converter and new spark plugs on my 1998 toyota camry. i'm going to replace plug wires from suggestions,it has a brand new catalytic converter and smog machine still reads high HC hydrocarbons,here are the results : Two Speed Idle Test IDLE-about 750 rpm HC:350ppm CO:0.59% CO2:14.5% o2:.2% NOx:84 everything is good when idle changes except the HC,allways high,at 1500 RPM the HC was about 250,Engine runs super smoothe and no misfires,no vacuum leaks visual inspection is good,going to hook up VERUS scantool now to check for any freeze frame date

Your 1998 Toyota Camry didn't fail CO but the CO emissions are very high. More than likely the high CO is causing high HC. CO stands for carbon monoxide. CO is the result of incomplete combustion due to a rich fuel mixture. You should look into faults which would cause a rich fuel mixture, such of the oxygen sensor/s, MAF (mass air flow) meter, and the ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor. Make sure these components are working properly. Once you figure out why your 1998 Toyota Camry is producing high CO, you'll be able to lower it and fix the HC fault as well. posted by SmogTips Support
