2001 Ford Excursion when do we or are we required to get a smog check?

We purchased a 2001 Ford Excursion summer 2009. When do we or are we required to get a smog check inspection?
Answer:

You will need to contact the DMV to find out when the next smog check requirement will be needed. More then likely you had your Ford smog checked when you purchased it (either you did performed the smog test or the seller did) however that smog certificate is not valid for registration renewal purposes at this time. Smog tests are required once every two years. What will determine whether you need a smog check this registration renewal period or the one following (in 2011) will be based on whether the pervious owner was required to get a smog check in 2009 for registration renewal purposes or in 2008. If they smogged in 2008, then you'll need a smog check in 2010. If they smogged the vehicle (for registration renewal purposes only) in 2009, then you won't need a smog check until 2011. The best way to find out is by calling the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) at (800) 777-0133.
