1977 Datsun 280Z Bad Odor From New Catalytic Converter
Hi. My 1977 Nissan Datsun 280Z recently failed a smog test and was told it was my catalytic converter and oxygen sensor. After replacing the CAT, I noticed a very bad odor.Should this be checked before the next smog check?
Answer:
Bad odor from a new catalytic converter sounds normal. It's more than likely the "burning off" of the light oil coating that's usually left behind during the CAT's production process. Your Datsun 280Z's exhaust gets very hot. Once the catalyst runs through a few heat cycles you won't have that odor any longer.
