1994 Chevy Pickup 1500 Smog Technician says Catalytic Converter has been Modified
I own a 1994 Chevy 1500 Pickup Truck 350 V-8. 2 years ago I replaced the catalytic converter. My truck just passed the emissions portion of the smog test, but the smog technician told me my Chevy 1500 failed the smog test because the catalytic converter has been "modified". i went back to the shop that replaced the catalytic converter 2 years ago. They told me that the converter they put on is the replacement part for that year, make, and model of my Chevy 1500. What should I do, who do I contact?

Answer:
Your option at this point is to get a second opinion either from another smog station or the state's Smog Check Referee's Office. You may contact the Bureau of Automotive Repairs Investigations Unit as well however they will recommend you first visit the state smog check referee, and if it is found that the smog station which failed your Chevy Truck made a mistake they will initiate an investigation, and you might be able to recover your smog inspection fee from the smog station. Note this process may become lengthy. If you'd like to schedule an appointment with the state's Referee's Office call (800) 622-7733. They will recommend you a local referee field station.
