For my 1987 Toyota Corolla failed the smog test for the functional check of the timing. However, after taking it to several mechanics (reputable), the mechanics said it is according to the manufacturer's spec. How ever the smog check technician says otherwise. What are my options?
Answer:
There are a few different ignition timing setting for a 1987 Toyota Corolla which we will list below. Your ultimate solution is either to have a second smog check station inspect your Toyota Corolla, or to have the State smog check referee's office conduct the smog inspection.
Toyota Corolla 1.6 Liter Carburated Engine should have its ignition timing set to 5 BTDC and timing should be checked while the engine is at 750 RPM and the distributor advance vacuum hose(s) disconnected and plugged.
Toyota Corolla 1.6 Liter Fuel Injected Engine should have its ignition timing set to 10 BTDC and timing should be checked while the engine is at 800 RPM and the Engine Check Connector near the distributor jumped.
