Smog Check Abort for Acceleration Violation

Smog Check Abort for Acceleration Violation

My car's smog check was aborted because of acceleration violation. It's the first time this has happened to my car. Does this mean the smog technician was doing something wrong while he was driving it on the dynamometer?

Answer:

The BAR-97 analyzer (smog check machine) uses the VLT (Vehicle Look-Up Table) to control the number of OBD II monitors requiring completion; the ASM test acceleration violation limits; the OBD II test disabled for some known CAN vehicles, type of tailpipe test type (Acceleration Simulation Mode or Two Speed Idle Test) and exhaust emission pass or fail standards. The BAR continuously updates the VLT to make problem vehicles more testable.

During the ASM smog inspection the smog technician only has a few seconds to increase speed from 15mph to 25mph. If he/she is unable to maintain the required speed parameters the smog machine will cause an acceleration violation abort.

If you feel the smog technician was unable to perform this procedure properly we'd recommend visiting a second smog station. If a second station is also unable to complete the smog check, we recommend visiting the State's Smog Check Referee's Office. They will be able to contact the BAR and update the VLT in order to accommodate your vehicle (if in fact the problem is with the VLT and not your vehicle). You may contact the state smog check referee's office at (800) 622-7733.
