1979 Camaro 350 Smog Test Abort Acceleration Violation
My smog test was aborted due to an acceleration violation. The smog technician tried it 3 times. He didn't really say what causes that to happen other than my car was running rough. I tried looking online about it and couldn't find anything.
Answer:
If your Camaro was having drivability problems which was not letting the smog technician maintain proper RPM to MPH ratio, the smog test would be aborted. The only way to complete the smog check would be by having the fault which is causing your Camaro's speed problem to be repaired.
During the ASM smog inspection the smog technician only has a few seconds to increase speed from 15mph to 25mph. If he/she is unable to maintain the required speed parameters the smog machine will cause an acceleration violation abort.
If you feel your Camaro does not have any drivability issues we recommend visiting the State's Smog Check Referee's Office. They will first try to conduct the smog inspection themselves. If they are also unable to get the smog check to complete AND they realize the problem is not with your Camaro, rather the BAR's Vehicle Lookup Table (which controls RPMs to MPH ratios) they can contact the BAR and update the VLT in order to accommodate your vehicle. You may contact the state smog check referee's office at (800) 622-7733.
