Saturn SC2 Failed Smog Check For Service Engine Soon Light
I own a 1999 Saturn SC2. My car didn't pass the smog check. It passed the emissions part, but my gas cap is cracked and my service engine soon light is burned out. Should they have not passed it because of this? Also, how long do I have to get it fixed and have it smogged again with the DMV? I paid the registration fees already.
Answer:
It's important that the Service Engine Soon light on your Saturn SC be working. It's the only way to tell whether the engine computer has detected a fault. When the ignition is in on position the service engine soon light should turn on. When the ignition is in run position (and your Saturn's engine is running) the Service Engine Soon light should turn off. This will indicate everything is functioning normally. If the Service Engine Soon light stays on after the engine has started running, then a Trouble Code has been stored in the engine computer and it must be retrieved in order to locate the source of the problem.
You have until the expiration of the current registration date (sticker) to complete the necessary repairs and pass a smog check. You may obtain a Temporary Registration Permit from the DMV if you will need more time which can extend the time you may legally drive your Saturn SC for up to 90 days.
