Toyota 4x4 SR5 Failed Visual Smog Test for Wiring Harness
I own a 1991 Toyota SR5. It failed the visual part of smog test but passed the rest of the smog check. I was told it would cost $3-4k to replace the engine wiring harness. I just had my Toyota truck tested for smog emissions. It passed everything else, but failed the visual portion. I was told Toyota did not install the proper engine wiring harness. Since Toyota doesn't make a replacement harnesses anymore, what can I do? I live in California.
Answer:
You will want to have the California Smog Check Referee's Office smog check your Toyota SR5. If in fact the Toyota dealership has discontinued your Toyota truck's wiring harness and the dealership had no choice but to install another version of the harness (and assuming your Toyota trucks passes a 2nd smog check at the Referee's Office) they will more than likely issue you a smog check waiver or place a sticker on your vehicle "OK"ing the new wiring harness. Call the state referee at (800) 622-7733.
