Toyota 4Runner SR5 Catalytic Converter that is 49-State Emission Certified
I live in CA and I have a 49-state emission certified 1999 Toyota 4Runner that didn't pass smog due to NOx failure. Do I have to go by the 49-state NOx standard when testing or the CA NOx standard when testing? The smog tech told me to replace the CAT to fix the issue but I can not get a 49-state Catalytic Converter shipped to CA. What are my options? Thanks, Paul.
Answer:
As of January 1, 2009 it is no longer legal to import or sell 49-state emission legal catalytic converters in California; and that's why you will not find any online retailers shipping to CA. The fines are hefty and criminal charges can be filed for both purchaser and seller.
The allowed option is to replace your Toyota 4Runners catalytic converter with an inexpensive (compared to dealer item) OEM CAT which is California approved and has been given an Executive Order number.
