I want to buy a new diesel pickup truck but need to know if diesel trucks need a smog check. Will I need to add smog parts to the engine so I can pass the smog inspection?
Answer:
Yes, diesel trucks which are 1998 and newer, and weigh under 14,500, such as the Ford Diesel F-350 truck, will need a smog check in order to register with the DMV. You can get a diesel smog check at any California certified smog test station. The diesel smog inspection will not require a dynamometer test (ASM) and a tailpipe emission sample is not collected/analyzed.
