1989 Toyota Camry Does it Need One or Two Catalytic Converters?

I took my 1989 Toyota Camry to get a smog check and they told me it could not be done because I have to have 2 catalytic converters on this car. Now is that true? They would not smog test it for that reason.

Answer:

As far as our reference guides indicate the 1989 Toyota Camry came equipped with either a 2.5 liter engine or 2.0 liter engine, in which case, both only required one (1) TWC catalytic converter. We recommend visiting another smog station or contacting the State Smog Check Referee's office for a smog inspection. You can reach the Referee Office by calling 1-800-622-7733.
