Chevy Astro Van Engine Replacement with 350 Block

I have an 1989 Chevy Astro van I brought to California when I moved here. I already had a V8 in it and it has all the smog equipment it needs but the engine block is cracked. The engine is a 350 from a 1993 Chevy 1500 series truck. My question is can I put all components from the 1993 in an 83 engine block and get it to pass the California smog test? Is this legal? I have a bare 350 stock block from a 1983 truck or the same size that was tested for cracks and is good.

Answer:

Engine changes continue to present problems and challenges. Anytime a vehicle has had its engine changed with a different model/year/size it must be inspected by the State's Smog Check Referee Office.

Mixing and matching emission control system components could cause problems, is generally not allowed, and may not pass the referee's smog check. Engine and emission control systems must be in an engine–chassis configuration certified by the California Air Resources Board (ARB) or U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The engine must meet or exceed the requirements for the year and class of vehicle in which it is installed.

Our recommendation is, when possible, to rebuild and reinstall the original engine, transmission, and emission control configuration.
