1977 Fiat X-1/9 Smog Equipment Making Car Pollute More
My Fiat X 1/9 has an antiquated smog system that actually increases the cars carbon foot print if it were to not have any smog equipment at all. The systems sole function is to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxide being emitted to the environment and in the process increases the amount of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons being emitted into the environment hence increasing my vehicles carbon footprint. My car will not pass smog with the antiquated smog equipment it currently has and none of the smog equipment is no longer available as it is a very rare. Considering the vehicles age, low miles driven every year (~1500 miles), lack of availability of smog parts, and the fact I can reduce the vehicles carbon footprint be REMOVING the smog equipment. I would like to ask for a smog exemption. The car is not a gross polluter but due to the unfair laws the state of California has passed I no longer can enjoy to drive my fastidiously maintained classic car on the road anymore. Any help would be appreciated.
Answer:
You can only recommend you contact the smog check referee office at (800) 622-7733. They may be able to offer you a limited parts exemption if in fact your Fiat X 1/9 emission components are hard to find. This will allow your to register your Fiat without a smog check. You will need to file for an exemption again in two years.
The referees office can also assist consumers with vehicles that have difficulties passing the smog check inspection due to unusual emission control component configurations.
