We are trying to buy 2005 Dodge 5.9 Diesel truck, it has a banks "6 gun tuner". Where and how do we get a smog test? What do we do? Will it pass the California smog check? Answer:
The Banks 6 Gun Tuner is not California legal as far as the smog check is
considered. Installing this system will cause your Dodge truck to fail the
smog inspection; as it will be considered an emissions system tamper.
Vehicle owners have removed Banks tuners during the smog check and
re-installed them afterwards; not legal, but a good work around to failed
the smog test. We can't recommend it, but it's commonly done.
As of 2010 all diesel cars and trucks under 14,500 lbs and 1998 and newer
require smog checks. A tailpipe emissions test is not administered but an
OBD II engine control system test is, and this is where the Banks tuner will
cause a smog inspection failure.
