2006 Toyota Camry Federal Emission Warranty

My 2006 Toyota Camry failed a smog test and the Toyota dealership wants to charge me $1200 for a catalytic converter. They also said there is a water pump leak and that also needs to be replaced for $690. Under federal guidelines I read that if you have a car with less than 80,000 miles and less than 8 years then the warranty should take care of it. Am I correct? Thank you for your help, Andrew.

Answer:

This is true. US EPA federal warranty guidelines indicate a vehicle 8 years or newer should have its catalytic converter repaired free of charge to the owner. There are strict policies on this however; like what condition was the vehicle maintained in during the first 8 years. In this specific case you will need to dicuss this matter with the Toyota dealership. There are two concerns... one being the production month and year of your Toyota Camry (vehicles are often sold in the previous year of the production model year). Check the primary VIN label on door (or door post) for the actual month and year of production. Second, was your Toyota Camry properly maintained during the last 8 years, and were there neglected repairs which contributed to the failure of the catalytic converter. The federal emissions warranty is strictly in place to repair (replace) manufacture defective emission components.

As far as the water pump is concerned... the water pump is not an emission related component which is covered under the Federal Emissions Warranty.
