If the check engine light is on will the car automatically fail the smog test? 1999 volvo, s80

I have a 1999 volvo, s80 and the check engine light comes on quite frequently. I do not want to put any more money towards repairs but I do want to renew the registration. Will the check engine light mean an automatic failure of the smog test?

Yes, unfortunately an intermittent or constantly illuminated check engine light on your Volvo S80 will cause it to fail the smog check. I have to recommend having your Volvo's check engine light trouble diagnosed before the smog inspection. posted by SmogTips Support
