Ford Ranger Won't Pass Smog Check

The 1993 Ranger would not pass the smog test last time until we replaced every single component, including the EGR, O2 sensors, vacuum hoses, and even the catalytic converter. Over $1000 total, and it barely passed.

It runs fine, but I had it checked just recently because it will be due in May, and they told me it will fail yet again. Is there some limit? If every single component has been recently replaced, how can this even be?

Regarding the 1999 Ranger, we had the engine replaced and the mechanic replaced it with a different engine. I spoke with our usual mechanic, and he said if the engine is not identical to the original I'll have to go to some special state smog referee? Is this true? Is it a one time thing or is it every year?

So, right now we have two perfectly good vehicles that we can't drive. I really appreciate your help in this matter as you might imagine. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance. Stan

Answer:

You may be eligible for a one time two year smog check waiver but you'll need to go through a current smog check (for the 1993 Ford Ranger) and spend at least $650.00 on repairs. The repairs you made during the last smog inspection period will not count towards this waiver, or smog exemption.

Here's some more information on how to get a smog check exemption.

As far as the 1999 Ford Ranger, yes you'll need to have the state's smog check referee conduct the initial smog inspection since it's had the engine changed. Once the referee does the smog check and your Ford truck passes, they will place a blue tag (sticker) near the emission label indicating the vehicle has had a legal engine change. Subsequent smog checks can be conducted at regular smog stations.
