I would like to buy a 1999 Chevy Suburban from the state of Utah. It has a 5.7 engine. Will it be smog legal for California? If not what will it need to be legal and pass a California smog check?
Answer:
There is a difference with California legal and Federal legal emission requirements. However if this 1999 Chevy Suburban is equipped with all the Federal required emission components which it was originally equipped with, it can pass the California smog check. The SUV's emission system not be tampered with and its emissions need to be below California emission cutscore; for HC, CO, and NO.
The rule is any USED vehicle which is equipped with the necessary Federal Emission Components is eligible for California registration as long as the vehicle's exhaust emissions fall within California's limits and the vehicle's emission system has not been tampered with.
