Interested in buying a 2010 Ford F150 5.4L from an out-of-state dealer to bring back to California. The trucks history report shows it was registered in Canada for 4 years then brought into the states. Manufacturers label state "Not for sale in states with CA emissions". Could I bring this car in as an out of state vehicle into CA? What would the difficulties be in getting it smog checked?
Answer:
If the emissions label on this Ford F-150 states it is US Federal Emissions equipped (just not California 50-State Emissions) it can be smog tested and registered in California. We recommend getting the dealership's guarantee regardless, specially if it has never been registered in any US state.
California allows USED vehicles which are Federal 49-State Emissions Certified, CA registration. The policy exempts new vehicles only.
