1999 Toyota Camry - Just moved to California from out of state
Hi,
I just moved here and am unfamiliar with how smog testing works. I have an appointment to go to the DMV in a few weeks to get my driver's license and registration switched to CA, but someone told me that I should get my car smog checked first. Is this true, or is this something I need to do after I get my registration and license from the DMV? If I should get smog checked first, is there any particular type of station that an out of state person needs to go to, or can I just pick any station? I read somewhere that I need DMV paperwork for the test, so I'm not sure if I can do this beforehand. Thanks! Answer:
You can visit ANY CA certified smog check station (test only, regular or
gold shield) to get a smog check certificate for your 1999 Toyota Camry. You
also don't need any DMV paperwork. Just take in your current vehicle
registration from out-of-state and hand it over to the smog technician. They
will enter your Toyota Camry's information into the smog machine as an out
of state vehicle and perform the smog inspection. The results of the smog
test will be electronically sent to the DMV, and by the time you visit the
DMV (give it at least one day), the information will be in their system.
