My 2002 Buick Century just passed the smog check. Two days later the check engine light came on. Mind you it's passed he smog test so I'm not worried about registration or anything like that. The code from the computer shows P0420. It is a generic code for the catalytic convertor not working properly. I did notice a change in car's performance too. I don't make enough money to pay for diagnosis... Is there any program in Sacramento to help with the cost of diagnosis and repairs? I recently changed the plugs, fuel filter, radiator and thermostat. Thanks. Answer:
The State of California does have a consumer repair assistance program but unfortunately the CAP repair program only applies to vehicle owners who are undergoing their vehicle's biennial smog check and their vehicle fails the smog test. In this particular case, since your Buick Century already passed the smog inspection, repairing the check engine light fault will had to be made by you... unless you choose to drive the vehicle the way it is with the CEL on until its next smog check is due and than apply for CAP. This probably is not the most responsible thing to do, but if you are unable to afford diagnosis and repair at this current moment, it may be your only option.
