Smog Testing Out of State To Confirm Passing

I'm buying a car from my brother who lives in Texas. I want to make sure it will pass a smog test in California before I bring it over. Can he take it to a local shop (in Texas) for an emissions test. What should he ask for? I know its not official but I want to know before moving forward.
Answer:

The emissions test in Texas is similar to that of California's. Ask your brother to take the vehicle in for an emissions pre-test. If the results are passing you can be safe to say the vehicle will pass the inspection in California as well, assuming nothing happens to the vehicle between his inspection and yours. posted by SmogTips Support
