Okay, My brother gave me his 2000 S10 it has 160,000 miles on it (Chevy S10 Ext. Cab 4.3 V6 Automatic Transmission). It was well maintained and runs very well. It had been sitting for a while (2 months) so I put a brand new battery. I went to get a smog check and they said it had 5 monitors that hadn't cleared and to just drive it some more. So I did that about 60 to 80 miles worth and I brought it back and 3 of the monitors cleared, the 2 remaining are the "secondary air injection" and "catalyst". I've put over 400 miles on it and those two monitors still come up. There are NO trouble codes showing, and the MIL (service engine soon) is off. So with no problems showing anywhere 3 different shops have told me just keep putting miles on it. One said it could take up to 800 miles. I sent an email to the CA BAR and they said take it to the dealer or smog repair shop to run on a dyno and they could set the monitors that way? What do I do? Answer:
We have to also suggest the BARs advice. Assuming you've followed the Chevy S10 drive cycle at least twice and are still unable to get the secondary air injection and catalyst monitors to trigger, your best bet is to have the Chevy dealership try to complete the monitors while the truck is on the dynamometer and hooked up to their manufacturer specific scan tool. Via the scan tool they can manually force monitors to run. We'd recommend visiting a smog check repair station, but it might be a hit and miss if they don't have specific experience with Chevy vehicles. If you do find a smog station which is familiar and can set the monitors, it'll probably be much cheaper than the dealership. It won't hurt to call around.
