Need To Transfer Vehicle Title But Won't Pass Smog Check

I was given my car as a gift. I have 10 days to transfer the title or else I'm going to get a penalty. The problem is the check engine light is on and it won't pass the smog test. The car was given to me a few days a go. I'm running out of time. I need to transfer the title ASAP. Since it won't pass the smog because of the engine light on what do I do? I've tried contacting the DMV but can not get a hold of anyone.
Answer:

Visit the DMV or use NeedTags.com and pay your title transfer fees. You can do this without needing a smog check. It will help you avoid late fees. The title transfer process will not be completed until you pass the smog inspection, but you'll get the vehicle registration (incomplete) in your name. Once the smog test is completed, the test results will be sent to the DMV electronically and the DMV will complete the title transfer process at that time. posted by SmogTips Support
