Is Smog Required on a 1972 MGB Registered Out of State?

I would like to buy a 1972 vintage MGB that has Texas license plate and registration. To register this vehicle in CA, does it require smog test? Although it will be registered for first time in CA, it is under the 1976 threshold (??) for requiring smog check, as I understand it. Please clarify. Thank you.

Since the MGB you plan on purchasing from out of state is pre-1975, it is in fact smog check exempt. You will not need to have it smog checked while seeking California registration. It will however need a VIN verification which you can get at any CHP office, certified VIN verification agency or a DMV branch office, with appointment. The pre-1975 smog exemption applies to all vehicles regardless of where they are being purchased from, out-of-state or in California. posted by SmogTips Support
