Can I Pass Smog with a Slow Transmission Oil Leak?
My vehicle has a small transmission leak due to a dented transmission oil pan. It leaves a small half dollar sized spot while I'm parked. Will I be able to pass the smog test? Answer:
A small transmission oil leak from the pan will not cause your vehicle to fail the smog test. The California smog inspection does not specifically check for transmission leaks. Unless the transmission oil leak is severe enough to cause drivability or emission issues, i.e. gear slip, improper gear engagement, transmission oil leaking near or on exhaust pipe(s), your vehicle can pass the smog check. We do recommend however fixing the problem as soon as possible. Driving with low transmission fluid can be detrimentally to the service life of your vehicle's transmission.
