What Type of Smog Test Do I Need When Selling My Car?
A smog check is not due for my vehicle since it was done last year during the registration renewal, however I do need one to sell my car, which I'm planning on doing soon. I need to know whether I can visit any smog station or if it has to be done at a STAR certified smog station... or perhaps even a test & repair smog shop? There's one really close to me. Thanks! Answer:
A regular smog check should do. You don't need to visit a STAR certified smog check center when obtaining a smog check for the purpose of selling a vehicle. Just note, a California smog certificate is valid for only 90 days from the date of issuance when the certificate is obtained for either registration renewal or a title transfer.
Also and just as reference, section 24007 (b)(2) of the California Vehicle Code states it is the responsibility of the seller to provide a valid smog certificate to the buyer of a vehicle.
