Can an Out of State Chevy Avalanche LTZ Pass the Smog Test in CA?
I'm planning on buying a 2013 Chevy Avalanche LTZ 4 x4, FE9 rated, from ou of state. I believe the FE9 rating means the vehicle has federal emission smog parts only and not California. Can this vehicle be smogged in California? Will it pass the smog check? It has 40,000 miles on it. Answer:
There is a difference with California legal and Federal legal emission systems. However, regardless of which type of emissions certification this particular Chevy Avalanche is assigned (Federal 49-state legal or California), it can pass the California smog check and obtain registration here.
We recommend you ensure that the vehicle has not had its emissions system tampered with and the check engine light is not illuminated. Once it arrives to California, obtain a smog inspection at any smog station. Advise the smog technician the inspection is required for title transfer (out of state to California). Once the vehicle passes the test, it's inspection results will be sent to the DMV electronically.
