1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse Engine Idle Too High

I went to get a smog test and they said that my car is idling at too high RPM. It is idling @ 1100 RPM and he said that it is about 400 RPM too high. How could I get the car to pass a check without paying a fortune to get it repaired? Is there anything I could do?
Answer:

You can try to adjust your 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse's idle air control valve, but it's a procedure that should really be attempted by a trained professional, or a vehicle owner familiar with engine mechanics. Your Mitsubishi's idle air control valve should be located on the underside of the throttle body. You can try adjusting it but if there is no idle speed difference after either turning in idle air screw in (clockwise) or out (counter-clockwise), the problem may be more severe like requiring the replacement of the idle air control solenoid... But I suppose trying to adjust the idle air valve yourself (if your mechanically inclined) before having a smog check repair station perform complete diagnosis, repair, and retest procedure is something you can try at home.
