My VW Beetle's check engine light has been on for about one month. My Registration Renewal Notice indicates SMOG Certificate Required. I was told that if check engine is on then it is an automatic failure. My question is relating to the $500 Assistance Program for failed smog tests. Should I have a SMOG test done (knowing it will fail) and submit the results along with the application required to qualify for repair costs. Or do I need to pay to have the light checked and repaired before having a smog test? Thank you for any help on this matter. Answer:
Absolutely wait for a CAP application approval before getting ANY repairs
done. CAP will not reimburse you if you handle the repairs before approval.
What you WILL have to do however is do get a smog check which indicates your
VW Beetle failed due to an illuminated Check Engine light and submit a copy
of this failed smog test report (VIR) with your application. Wait 2 to 3
weeks, you should get a reply, and if approved, find a CAP certified list of
smog check repair stations from a list which will be provided to you by the
State.
