1992 Mercury Tracer - Can I retire it to CAP if it fails the smog check?
I was going to sell my car, but I fear it might not pass smog, as I can smell gas when the engine is running. It does not say on my registration that I need to do a smog this year.
Do I take it to a test only place? And, if it fails, where to I take it to, to retire it? And, when and how you pay people?
Someone told me the refund would be applied to your taxes the following year. Is this true?
I live in Chico, CA and want to know the nearest place to turn it in, and the process, etc. Thank you kindly! Answer:
Since your Mercury Tracer's registration renewal does not ask for a smog
check this year you can take it for a smog check (for the purpose of selling
the vehicle) to any smog station you choose; test only, test & repair, or
gold shield. If your Mercury fails the smog check you can then apply for the
CAP vehicle retirement program which will pay you $1000.00 soon as your
application is accepted and you take your Mercury to an authorized CAP
vehicle dismantler.
